First drive to work in the FieSTa was a success! City traffic, stop and go... What is my MPG you ask?

31.4. Bitches. This is glorious.

Now, I did run into a bit of a come-back-down-to-earth moment when I called my insurance agent today to get the FieSTa on it. (This is the second time I typed "FieSTa". I'm not sure if I like it.)Collision on my old Focus was $260 or so. Collision on the Fiesta is almost double that. I don't even know. They'll send me a new policy with the exact cost. I just heard "five hundred..." then my brain melted a bit.

While I figured a sportier car would have this effect, I also assumed that with it being newer, it would be safer in EVERY CONCEIVABLE WAY, and therefore, less expensive.

Also, it could be that I've had a speeding ticket for a few months. I don't know how that affects it.

Regardless, insurance for the Fiesta is around $800. With my Porsche, the total for 6 months will come to $1,100. I can swing it, but I don't necessarily want to.

The idea of paring down the fleet to 1 car has now become more enticing. Sadly :(

TALK ME DOWN, OPPO.

"I also assumed that with it being newer, it would be safer in EVERY CONCEIVABLE WAY, and therefore, less expensive." What you think.

"I also assumed that with it being newer, it would be more expensive in EVERY CONCEIVABLE WAY, and therefore, more we have to pay out." What the insurance company thinks.

Just trade the Porsche for something cheaper to insure.

1985/1 Porsche 944 N/A. Had it a little over a year. Fantastic handling car. I love it. But right now I feel like a Mormon with a new wife. I'm neglecting my first love for the shiny, new, hot piece of 200 hp hot hatch ass.

I'll keep your 944 company while you take the new hotness out :3

$1,100 for insurance on two cars doesn't sound that bad to me at least. I'm a 23 year old in California and I pay about $840 every 6 months for my Z.

Move the Porsche to collector status? Heritage? Can you do that through another company? Put a mileage limit on it or some witchcraft?

Parts are more expensive on a new car as compared to one say 8 years old. That and the fact that someone with a car like a Fiesta ST is more likely to drive it in a spirited manner as opposed to the driver of a 1998 Buick or 2007 Toyota Camry. Call it the "This is why we can't have nice things effect."

Related example: You could be the guy who owns a 335i and drives it in a manner that would make Ralph Nader grin ear to ear and save your hooning for track days. You may actually also park in between the marked lines (*GASP*). When stuck in traffic though, some will look at you and label you as a typical "Asshat BMW driver" regardless.

This is kind of what insurance companies do to anyone wishing to insure what is considered or labeled a "sports car."

What does collector status mean again? I know there's a 25 year mark for cars, but I don't know what that means regarding registration or insurance.

The speeding ticket is a big factor as they renewed your quote and have to run your driving record in which most cases a speeding ticket stay on record for 2-3 years.

It would have gone up at renewal even if you did not add the Fiesta

Har har har.

But yeah, I really think if I decided to sell the 944, there would be plenty of people willing to give it a good home. Especially here.

Yeah. I knew it was 3 years for the record. It was a 4-pointer too. So I guess that didn't help :/

I think its just a old/rare car that you can insure as a low mileage car. Like, 5k miles a year kind of thing.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to see what you can do for the 911.

Kinja'd!!!0

Well you are still better off. I pay 1800 for 6 months and that is just for one car my 07 Z4M roadster, but on a car like this I wanted full coverage anyway.. I dont have any points on my licence, have never been ticketed for speeding, just because the area that I stay is close to the car crime capital Newark so the sky high insurance rates..

Is that the mileage the car is telling you? I wouldn't trust it. It's almost never accurate. Wait til you fill up and do the math.

The readout on the car usually says about 29-30 for me and I get more like 27-28

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, that's my plan. And I was hoping that the trip computer would be pessimistic.

But man... the thing is like a cruel game! I love driving slowly and in higher gears just to watch the tenths tick up and up as I improve my mileage.

Yeah just go talk to your agent and have them put the 944 at like 3k miles a year. Should be like 50 $ a month. Or less even.

Yeah, it's fun. I'll end up in 6th at 30 mph to try and get the numbers to go up. And it's a lot of fun to reset the computer then hit the highway for a while, and see numbers in the mid 30s.

I have 'full insurance' on our daily drivers, for a lot of money, and Hagerty on my '73 Buick and '54 MG. The Buick and MG together cost somewhere under $300/year. (of course, I don't live in CA which may help). The other two cars cost a small fortune to insure. But the old ones are not what's concerning - they are cheap to keep.

Shop around! ALOT! I was using State Farm. the problem with State farm is it's perfect for new car buyers. It is a good company yes but the costing. A old car you buy? It's gonna be $400 every 6 months for me no matter what or how old it is...that price drops every year slightly the longer I keep it. My old 242 Volvo was $211 every 6 months when I let it go it was in the family for so long...the replacement 3 year old S-10? $325 every 6. One town over (across the street) and it would have been $425 every 6. So I wanted to add my wifes car to my insurance and end her separate insurance....doubled the price. Ther's a multi-line discount but honestly, it was huge. I'm GEICO now. it's half the price of SF to cover everything. I'm not saying they're right for you, but look at how your company does it's pricing structure. I might pay what i'm paying forever with no changes for length of ownership....but overall given how often people are changing out cars....it's for the better in my book.

Limited-release vehicle typically bought by younger overzealous drivers who may not be the best at vehicular control, and also a likely target of thieves = expensive insurance
